Santa Fe in Arizona

I am trying to find information about the ballast color that Santa Fe (ATSF) used in central Arizona circa 1950.

Any sites or recommendations are welcome.

Santa Fe may very well have been using cinder ballast at that time. The local cinders in Arizona will run red or gray or black. This was discussed several years ago on the Santa Fe Listserve.

SSW is on the right track. Pardon the pun. Depending on where you whre in Arizona, Santa Fe would be either of the colors he mentioned. Up north, sometimes gray, sometimes reddish color. Others, they used cinder type and went blackish. Area and time period would be needed to get exact. As some sections changed colors. I can think of a few spots were they freshened up with red/almost pink over gray.

I think in a nutshell, you can do just about any color you find pleasing and get away with it as the prototype changed quite a bit
