The best drawing of AA20-1is included in "Russian Steam Locomotives"by Le Fleming and Price, published by Kelley, New York 1969. The drawing is by A.E Durrant, and is based upon somewhat cruder official diagrams seen in Rakov and other Russian sources.

Steam Locomotives of the Santa Fe, by Frank M Ellington (Railroad Car Press) is the best reference on the technical aspects of ATSF steam, and includes official perspective sketches of the tandem cylinder castings, as well as photos and drawings of the locomotives.

Having seen that (deleted), I now feel happier about the Triplex! At least the Matt Shay and its siblings didn't destroy the track.

The ATSF tandem compound 2-10-2's had four cylinders, with the high pressure cylinders in front of the low pressure cylinders, connected together by a common piston rod. I saw a photo of one of them many years ago, so other details are (to put it mildly) hazy. A quick search indicated 161 tandem compounds in the 900 and 1600 classes, all converted to simple operation by 1916.

Hi Matthew:

I have a copy of the January 1961 issue of Trains, which features an article called "The Soviet Search for Super-Power." It has some photos of the 4-14-4 and some other odd Soviet steamers, including, of all things, a Russian Beyer-Garratt! If you'd like a copy just email me and I can send it to you via snail mail, or maybe scan it as a PDF and send it to you that way.

I would also be interested in drawings of Santa Fe 2-10-2 and 4-6-0 tandem compound locomotives built about 1903.
If anyone could help me out with drawings or dimensions of these locomotives I would be very grateful.
Thanks
Matthew

I Googled "Russian 4-14-4 steam locomotive" and came up with this interesting link.
