As one possible place to look for prototype info that could be used in modeling, you might take a look at the Railroads of Madison County web site. There are numerous photos, descriptions and stories of railroading as well as details of tracl work and hand signals and maintenance drawing of NYC yards in Indiana..

This doesn't begin to scratch the surface of what is available there that might be of aid to a modeler.
