Replacement cabs for Athearn GP35's?
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, February 11, 2006 9:29 AM
I have two early model Athearn GP-35's that will be modeled after the Western Pacific 35's. I am not real happy with the cab detail on the Athearns and would like to install new cabs. Anyone out there have ideas, maybe Cannon Assoc. or the like?
Thanks,
Brad

Since you state that your Geeps are early model Athearns, I am assuming they are
'wide bodies'. This will pose difficulties in using most of the aftermarket detail
parts, including Cannon cabs. The problem is that the Cannon cabs are designed
to fit on scale-width hoods. On a 'wide body' the roof angles won't align with the
hood top edges. As a former long-time Athearn wide body owner, I completely
agree with you on the poor appearance of the cab. The SDP40/SD45 had the
same problem. I wish I could be more helpful, but based on my experiences
with the early Athearn products, there is not too much available that would
work easily. One thing you might try is to find replacement GP35 shells from
another manufacturer. I see these on ebay on occasion. Rail Power Products-
since bought out by Athearn-made one which is fairly good. I have also seen
Kato shells there as well. Sorry I can't be of more assistance.

Rick,
Thanks for the help. Your experience has been very helpful to my question as I knew nothing about the cab alignment problems that Athearn seems to suffer from. I will probably purchase a couple RPP GP35 shells. It's only money right!
Thanks,

Brad, the wide Athearn cabs are the result of larger than scale bodies. These were neccesitated by the motor Athearn used at the time. (1970s) With the advent of the narrower motor, Athearn was able to mold a more scale body/cab. If your unit has the more narrow Athearn motor, you can then use the more accurate body and cab. Details West may have what you're looking for in a more detailed cab. Hope this helps, and hope your project works out for you.
