AAR 40Ft flat car.
Try building a Tichy or a Red Caboose kit instead of upgrading a MDC car. Join the steam era Freight car Yahoo Group and you'll find a wealth of info. A Cal Scale detail pack has a typical brake layout drawing you could follow. Resin kits offer a more challenging kit with all the parts in the right places, try a Sunshine kit. Go to www.burlingtonroute.com and click on the Modeler's depot, HO Scale Plastic & Resin kit list / Flatcars tab/ FM11 to see a car I built. There is so many lead sheet squares underneath I didn't have much room for brake levers so I only modeled the major parts.
It'll handle 40+ cars behind it at the head end of a freight.

I just looked on that site and there's no flat car prototype info. I'm sorry, maybe this isn't the place to look after all.

It does have a lot of other useful stuff though.
