Changing couplers on european material
Posted by fleduc on Friday, January 6, 2006 8:17 PM
Hello,

I have some european passengers cars (Jouef, Lima) and I would like to replace the couplers with kadee type.

I seems that it will be easier to change the whole trucks.
Is there a type or brand of truck that is more suitable for this ? That fits best ?

Thank you,

Not sure if this helps, but Kadee does make a replacement coupler to use to replace the European NEM type coupler, if you scroll down a little on this link, it's on the Kadee website:

Is your equipment fitted with the NEM 362 plug-in coupler pocket?

It's really kind of hard to support your local hobby shop when the nearest hobby shop that's worth the name is a 150 mile roundtrip.

I doubt that you'd need to change out the entire truck--the Kadee #16 through #20 NEM couplers are manufactured to fit on the shank of the NEM coupler, depending on the length of the shank. I outfitted one end of two European electric locos with Kadees (Swiss Crocodile and a German articulated electric) with good success. You shouldn't have any trouble converting your passenger cars.

I think your lima and Jouef-s, not jet have these NEM shafts. The easiest way is to install
short coupling meg-s. Made by Ribu ore Symoba. After this you can install the Kadee #16 through #20. It might not bee easy to get hold of these in the US.

You might get more responses if you post this on the "General" forum. You have posted this on the PROTOTYPE INFORMATION FOR THE MODELER forum. Yout topic has nothing to do with prototype information.

Hi, I´m Christian,
Ribu or Symoba doesn´t exists now any more. But if you haven´t a NEM 362 pocket on your cars you can get some kits from Roco or Fleischmann. These companies have walthers for example.
