Hi Scott,
Thanks for taking the time to research the motive power. I think I have accumulated a pretty good roster without even knowing for sure what was being used then. I have 2 Athearn F7A's and 1 F7B along with an Athearn Genesis 2-8-2 and a Mantua 2-6-2. I also have a Proto 1000 F3A/B set in the black D&RGW scheme.
Regards,
Roger

Roger, I'm pretty certain D&RGW used EMD F-7s in the joint line service. Alco PA-1s would also be a possibility. You shouldn't have any trouble finding reasonably priced models of the locomotives you need. Engines painted in D&RGW passenger colors could be a problem. Athearn makes a pretty good F-unit, especially in the Genesis series. The older Athearn Fs are great in terms of performance, but the molds are over 40 years old. Athearn also used to make a PA model, but the molds are about the same age. Proto-2000 (now Walthers) makes a very good PA model. I think the only real problem you'll encounter is finding the correct paint job. I know this reply is very general, but hope it helps you some.

Second book shows a 4-8-4 pulling passenger train on Royal Gorge route in 1950. D&RGW engine roster for 1954 lists diesel-electric; 174 freight engines, 38 switchers, and 6 passenger engines (2 A-B-A's) with 2000 hp each. 1954 shows 16 4-8-4's down from 43 in 1950. They must have been using some of those freight diesels for passenger service. That's all I can find. I'd like to see your efforts as you progress.

One book I'm looking at shows a M-64 class Baldwin 4-8-4 pulling 11 passenger cars (the Royal Gorge) south of Littleton in 1948. Another picture shows a M-68 class Baldwin 4-8-4 pulling the same train at Acequia in 1947.Also shown are freight trains on this line headed by class L-131 Alco 2-8-8-2's in 1951 and 1954, one is being helped by a 2-8-2. I'll check another book I have and let you know if I find any passenger info for '53.

I can't help you with the power question, but I live in Colorado Springs and thought I would toss these pics out there. These are about a mile from my house near the Air Force Academy.

I'm no expert but your question deserves an answer so I would guess F units, PA's or steam but I know of no steam done for D&RG but brass.

WHAT DID THE D&RGW USE TO POWER PASSENGER TRAINS ON THE JOINT LINE?

I am modeling the Joint Line between Denver & Pueblo set in 1953, and want to know what types of locomotives did they use for passenger trains in that time period?
Thanks
