I recall seeing a 44 tonner with a bell like you see on a regular EMD switcher mounted on the end of the hood..I have also see the bells mounted under the frame next to the steps. So,a bell's location vary from unit to unit depending on the customers whims..

In Duluth at the museum there 44 tonner had a bell directly under the cab next to the fuel tank.

What was the ringer if not a bell?

It depends on what the prototype railroad wanted as there are exceptions to everything but I believe a stock off the shelf unit had it under the front of thecab on the engineers side.

Where was the bell usually located on a G.E. 44 tonner?
