UP in Canada
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, November 15, 2005 5:33 PM
Hello All,

Can anyone please tell me what locomotive classes Union Pacfic uses on trains into Canada ?
I am particulary interested in the Ontario area as that is where my layout will be set.

All the best,

Kristian

I've only seen C44-9w's but there are probably more.

Whatever's on the train.

If its a coal train, AC's. If its anything else, a high horsepower 6 axle unit.

Thanks for the information. I can now add a few UP locos to the mix.
I know that CSX run into Canada but are thay still using the U23b's or have they all been replaced by now ?

Have you actually seen UP locomotives on trains in the part of Ontario that you are modelling? UP interchanges with CP at the Idaho/Canadian border....photos support the use of SD40-2's from both roads on these trains. CP has borrowed UP AC6000's and Dash 8-40C's for testing at various times as well.

Hi,

I have a Green frog DVD entitled CN North America vol 1 which shows a mixed frieght hauled by four locos, two CN and two UP. The train is seen passing Sarnia depot, having previously transited the St Clare river tunnel into Canada.
I have now identified the UP locos shown as a Dash 8-40C and a SD 40-2
You will appreciate that I want to get a prototypical look so I need to source the right locos in the correct liveries currently in use.

All the best,

Kristian.

These are mixed 6-axle lashups in WA heading to Canada (and returning). Basically, over here in the NW, it's UP with CPRail and/or CEFX lease units.

The UP interchanges with the former IC, now CN, on several auto trains, both parts and finished autos in Illinois that end up in Canada.

Hi again All,

Thanks for the very helpful responses. Mikes first photo sums up exactly the look I must try to achieve with my layout.

All the best,

Kristian.
