I thought the M was from Morrison-Knudson.
The light is on the nose, with a metal plate on the cab over the old location, the numberboards are on the cab in the usual location, and the bell is on the bottom left hand side just before the fuel tank. Life-Like Proto 2000 has a great model of it with the correct locations as well as a great drawbar pull, I have a model of 5490.
Another good page for photos is http://www.trainweb.org/galt-stn/cproster/topindex.htm it's quite good.

In summary, the M in SD40-2M indicates "modified", as all 10 were modified from their original configuration. Only 5493-5498 were rebuilt from Rio Grande SD45's and retain the flared radiators. 5490 was rebuilt from a Southern Pacific SD45 with the radiator section from a GP40, so it looks similar to an SD45-2. 5491, 5492 & 5499 were rebuilt from Union Pacific and Chesapeake & Ohio SD40s.

Hi, I´m Christian from Germany,
I´m modelling the CP-Rail from 1950 till 1999 and I have some questions about 5490-5499.
I live in Germany because that I can´t look by my own. Can anyone show me some pictures or discribe me the light, bell and numberboard position of loco´s 5490-5499?
I only know that these loco´s are SD40-2M(Montreal?)buy by the CP-Rail in1995 from the Rio Grande or so . These loco´s were SD-45,rebuilt(some other doors etc.) and still in service. If it help I hear that there was a report in the canadian railroad papers.[8D]
