You might want to consider checking out the various town historical societies of those places in which you're interested (like, say, the Lowell Historical Society: http://ecommunity.uml.edu/lhs/).

A visit to the area wouldn't hurt, either.

It's really kind of hard to support your local hobby shop when the nearest hobby shop that's worth the name is a 150 mile roundtrip.
