Hello,

Actually, Kalmbach publishes two books that sort-of go into these topics in a general way. They are both written by Jeff Wilson and are recent publications. I am impressed with the information he writes and the way he communicates
it everytime I encounter it.

The books are:
The Model Railroader's Guide to Industries Along the Tracks.
The Model Railroader's Guide to Freight Cars.

The "industries" book has a bibliography and the "freight cars" book has a
list of available models. There are abundant photos included.Of course,
there are many more details about industries and rolling stock than can be covered in these. There will always be a need to dig and research for more specific details than any book can provide, but here is a good start.

Check them out.

Happy digging!
Russ

That actually sounds like an interesting idea for a Kalmbach soft cover book. I don't think there is anything like that in publication. It would be great resource for those planning model railroads with operations in mind.

The first section could cover all of the different car types, and their evolution over time. The second section could cover the different industries served by rail, telling the types of cars they use.

The information compiled in such a book would take a good deal of research. I would certainly buy a copy of such a book, and I suspect a lot of other people would too.

My question or idea is there a book out there that tells you what type of rail cars you might see at different locations IE factorys? If not it sounds like there is a wealth of information in this forum at could make it happen look forward to reading more thanks J
