The only way for sure is find a photo of the car. Hatches varied at building, depending on the buyer, type of cargo, where the car was intended to be loaded and after repairs the hatch may well be a different type. Plenty of cars ended up wiyth mixed hatches.

PS2 Covered Hopper Hatches
Posted by Russorgan on Friday, August 26, 2005 2:25 AM
Hello, This is my first post. I am pretty new to this hobby - 2 years?

I read the forums occasionally and learn something new every time I visit.
I am really fascinated at the depth of topics, history and information possible
in model railroading, sometimes to the point of becoming imobilized by it.

I just purchased two Walthers kits for PS2 Covered Hoppers. One has
markings for Pacific Grain Co. and the other for Louis Dreyfus. The kits
include two versions of roof hatches. One is plain and one is ribbed.
Which type of hatch would be the correct one for the prototypes? Is this
determined by the date of manufacture or by individual shipper specifications?

Please accept my thanks for any advice!

Russ
