To add another question. For just painting the handrails on the early Kato N scale Santa Fe units, which color would work there? If I decided to paint handrails on my Athearn HO Scale units, which color? Thanks.

Hello "csxmu,"

You mentioned Scalecoat, and that paint line doesn't happen to have a color labeled Santa Fe (or "ATSF") yellow. That doesn't mean they don't have a color you can use. Scalecoat no. 15 Reefer Yellow would be my first choice, but if you want to match an existing model you might also want to look at no. 8 D&H Yellow and no. 42 EL Yellow. One of those three will probably be fairly close.

Or if you're not determined to use Scalecoat paint, you can try Accu-paint no. 64 ATSF War Bonnet Yellow, Floquil 110178 Santa Fe Yellow, or Modelflex 1633 ATSF Yellow.

Good luck,

Andy

If you're talking about post-1945 Scalcoat reefer yellow works. The original paint scheme on the FTs and the early F-7s (the so-called "Cat's Whiskers") used a much more pale yellow. I can't give you a mix but the Stewart SF FT with the original paint scheme (w/ the red stripe between the yellow and blue) is a good match.
