Well a search with the Magazine Index (see very top of the page) turned up the following possibilities:

Economical coal loads for hoppers
Model Railroader, June 1990 page 95
Article also published in Freight Car Projects and Ideas , page 63
( "BONTRAGER, DAVID", COAL, HOPPER, LOAD, FREIGHTCAR, MR )

Loading N scale coal cars
Model Railroader, May 2000 page 97
Making realistic loads for hoppers and gons
( COAL, HOPPER, "KOHLMANN, KEITH", LOAD, FREIGHTCAR, N, MR )

Or try one of these threads over on TrainBoard:

Hope that helps a bit.

Regards

Ed

I can't place the issue that shows how to detail hopper and locomotive tender coal piles. Help me Obewan, you're my only hope.
