Mixing motive power with UP's......

I live in eastern Canada and so don't ever get to see any Union Pacific's locos around here.Although a UP Dash 8 has been seen in a CN grain freight about a month ago,it is a very unlikely occurence so far east.

I have elected to model UP simply because you probably could get almost any model loco bearing their colors and still be realistic,since it seems that UP has owned at least a few examples of every or most prototypes.The other part of my engine roster is made of Canadian Pacific locos,which feature a variety of models also,along with different paint schemes depending of the time bracket the unit belonged to.

My question is...which other railroad companies share trackrights or have agreements with either or both UP and CP,so that I could add a few different units (SP,SF,CSX,CEFX or else) to my roster and operate them in consists or on the same tracks,or parked alongside in a freightyard and still be realistic?Thanks for any answer.

If you have UP, you could (depending on what era you are ing) include SP, CNW, SSW or DRGW. In addition the UP leases CEFX, FURX, HLMX and several other leasing company engines. The UP (and CP probably) also interchanges with the CSXT and NS so those engines would show up (along with an occaisional CR unit).

I live in the midst of UP action - and see UP cross pollinated with CP all the time.

And as Dave said... doing UP will allow for some roads the UP absorbed. I'm in Eastern Washington State - and aside from the UP/CP shown above - we also see red CEFX and occasionally blue CEFX with the big UP diesels. I do see ex-SP in the yard here sometimes, but rarely mixed in with the Canadian-bound trains. It does happen though.

I have also seen a CNW. But not in the mixed Canadian trains. Same with a DRGW tunnel motor. Mixed with UP - but not CP/UP. As for CSX or NS... they are only in the BNSF trains up in my neck of the woods. As are the FURX and NREX units.

Also, if you look at the following page:

You'll see numerous units that were from other roads absorbed by the Borg (hey, I'm modelling UP too, but I can laugh at it, can't I?). You'll see a number of units that were never even assigned UP numbers even when used for several years, and likely weren't painted over. In other cases, where painted over, they weren't done immediately upon acquisition.

It also gives some idea of roads that interchanged with UP, since I doubt that UP bought up too many operations that weren't physically connected in some way!

Just another thought.
