Chris:
Until about 1990, San Francisco had what was known as the State Belt Railroad, which ran primarily along the Embarcadero and served the piers, warehouses, and so forth, of the Port of San Francisco.
A couple web sites that might be helpful to you are the Golden Gate Railroad Museum at ggrm.org and the Virtual Museum of San Francisco at sfmuseum.org.
Also, try this Google search: "State Belt" +"San Francisco" This will direct you to a number of sites, many of which include a lot of really nice photographs.
I hope this is of some help. Good luck with your research.

I do not know about a website, but Harre DeMoro put out a book called
Southern Pacific San Francisco Bay Area Steam
that contains numerous photographs of car floats, tugs and moles in Oakland and San Francisco. The book is probably out-of-print, but if you look at shows or at a used book store, you might find one.
This covers only the SP, there are no photographs of either the WP yard in San Francisco or of the ATSF yard and car float operation, either. The ATSF kept a GE diesel in their SF yard and served a few businesses in SF, as well. I do not recall if there was an interchange track with either the SP or WP (you would think that there would be, though), but the ATSF could only reach their SF yard by car float.

Anybody knows about a website where I could find pictures of S.F. port, wharves, docks, warehouses, railroading, etc.
