Milwaukee Boxcabs
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, March 21, 2005 2:00 PM
Recently acquired a set of NPP boxcabs, and have set about rejuvenating them. Has anyone out there ever repowered and regeared a unit such as this? I have some thoughts on the subject, but want to get the opinions of other more experienced modelers. As far as I can tell, the old gears look to be in pretty good shape, but the motors look the worse for wear. Also, has anyone ever replaced the gear towers in this type of unit? Any and all advice or criticism is welcome. Thanks and have a Great Day......[:p]

A picture of the mechanism would help in determining what needs to be done. My Alco P5a's have a gear train dwon the side of the frame to power the axles and a screw on the end of the motor shaft that turns a gear on the center of one axle. They are commonly refered to as "the grinders". Some mechanisms are just dogs no matter what you can think of to do to them.

Try Northwest Short Line in Seattle. They have all sorts of gears and such, many for specific models. The old KTM diesels and electrics imported by a number of firms were particularly notorious for having the gears split on their shafrs and NWSL can take care of you. The web address is www.nwsl.com

I have used Sagami can motors in a few projects....fantastic! There are lots of different sizes and configurations available.
