Unusual Passenger Cars on Amtrack
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, March 7, 2005 3:49 PM
Over the weekend I was train watching on the old Missouri Pacific line through Independence, MO (now UP) when Amtrack came through. Besides a handful of modern Amtrack cars, the last three cars on the train were a CB&Q California Zepher car (still lettered as such) and a Southern Pacific passenger car. I can't remember what the third one was, but it seemed unusual to see these cars of another era on the rear of an Amtrick train. Can anyone tell me what is/was up?

Cheers,

Ed

Sounds like some private owner cars. If you have the proper equipment, meet Amtrak's standards, and have enough money, you can have your private car pulled on the back of an Amtrak train.

There is a guy who restored PRR cars, and you can see them every once in a while, he shows them off every railfest in Altoona. He even has E8's

Now that Amtrak is pretty much out of the mail and express freight business, it is much easier for private car owners to hitch rides. It is still very expensive to do.

What's the current mileage charge? Liability insurance minimums also likely to be enforced, too.

This past fall I was waiting for a train to go by at a stop and the last car on the Amtrack train was a beautiful old restored Observation Car with the porch or what ever they call it on the end. The coupple that were riding with it were having coffee on the deck. I waved at them and they waved back. Must have been quite the trip, Fall colors and such in Upstate NY!
