Cryogenic Reefers
Posted by caldreamer on Tuesday, August 29, 2023 9:53 PM

I recently saw a couple of Cryo-Trans reefers on a southbound train stopped waiting to get into the NS Hagerstown, Maryland yard. Do not see them very often, but they are still in active service.

There is a facility at the west end of what used to be Forrest Yard at Buntyn in Memphis that regularly sees these cars.  They are very common in NS consists east of that point.

Any reference to a tank car or reefer in a gon has ABSOUTLY NOTHING to do with my post about the 70 foot Cryo-Trans reefers that I saw.  Please see my second post with link to a picture of one of these cars.

Yup, I understand that.  But I thought that the tank in the gon might be one of those Transformer thingsSmile

ABSOUTLY NOTHING

Well, since I'm the one that posted the cryogenic tank car I assume all responsibility for my error.

I saw the prefix 'cryo' and didn't think it through. The link to the photo would have helped if included in the first post.

My bad Embarrassed

I have to leave the photo up, though, just to retain the context of the thread.

Regards, Ed

Yes, but no.

They're regular mechanical reefers.  Despite the "cryo" in "Cryo-Trans," they're not running cryogenic reefers. The cryogenic reefers that were built in the 90s were rebuilt as mechanical. Despite the world having plenty of gaseous CO2 laying around, liquid CO2 wasn't cost effective at the time.

Cryo-Trans itself isn't long for the world, as they were acquired by Lineage Logistics about two years ago.
