Thanks again. Those pictures from Thurmond, WV show exactly what I was looking for.

Conway Scenic Railroad has a wooden roundhouse right across the track from its North Conway NH Station. It's very easy to find photos of it on the internet.

I have seen some photos online of the Shay shed at Klickitat out west here, which was wood and may still be (I'm not sure it's still standing) but I cannot seem to lay my mitts on any of those photos right now. Here's the #5 Shay out in front of the shed in 1963. This photo doesn't help you much but might be good for detail analysis. I believe there was just a single large door. I'll keep looking.

If I recall correctly, the photo of the door is very interesting because they chopped a section out above the middle of the opening to accommodate additional spark-prohibiting hardware on the stack of one of the Shays, which made it taller. They realized only after they'd added it to the Shay that it wouldn't fit through the door anymore. However, I'm not sure that it was #5 that had the too-tall stack. In fact I thought it was "Ol' No. 7".

-Matt

EDIT: Okay, wrong! Forget what I said about only one door. Here's a freakishly tiny image from a now-unavailable eBay entry of a photographic slide for sale. I'm given to understand that that's Ol' No. 7 sitting outside there, and if my memory is correct about the hole above the door, this photo was taken either before they cut it (unlikely since it's in color) or after they repaired it (and decided to leave the engine outside?). Or maybe the hole was never cut at all and I dreamt it. "Caveat lector."

I've had the same problem, probably since I use my computer for searching model stuff so often. If I want to find a picture of a real RS-3 or water tank or whatever, Google assumes I want to find a model of one to buy.

In this case, maybe searching with a specific railroad would help, like "Southern Pacific wood enginehouse" or something like that?

PROTOTYPE pictures for wooden engine house?
Posted by Benjamin Maggi on Wednesday, December 7, 2022 10:10 AM

I am scratchbuilding a model of a wooden engine house based on plans in the March 1995 issue of Model Railroader. It is going well, but I am interested in seeing pictures of real, actual engine house structures. When I search online, all I find are pictures of MODELS of wooden engine houses. They are nice, but I would love to see prototype pictures. Does anybody have any?

Thanks.
