Which ever era of black RS3s you are modelling (multiple yellow stripes / single yellow stripe / no stripe), both ends are the same.

Mark.

Wow! No inputs, I'm surprised.  I also reached out to the Bridge Line Historical Society, but nothing from them either.

D&H yellow stripes

A little over a year ago I purchased a D&H Black and Yellow RS-3 decal set from Highball Graphics.  I'm finally getting around to using them.  One question.  I noticed that there are two different patterns for the end stripes. Does one pattern go on the short hood and the other on the long hood, or for a given unit is the pattern the same on the long and short hood?  I've looked in a number of D&H in color books (Morning Sun) and can't see a consistent pattern. The folks at Highball Graphics didn't know either, although they suspected that the pattern would be the same on both ends and depended on who and when the striping was applied.
