What means UTCK ?
Posted by GaDave on Tuesday, March 15, 2022 9:22 PM

I saw a new Atlas 25,500 gal. tank car that is referenced as “NATX [UTCK Repaint]”. I understand NATX is a reporting mark that was used by North American Tank LineNorth American Car Corp, and General Electric Railcar Services Corp, but can’t find a reporting mark “UTCK” or a company using that abbreviation. I understand UTCX was used by Union Tank Car Company - could "UTCK" be a misprint or, otherwise, can anyone tell to what UTCK is referring? Thanks Confused

Union Tank Car bought the tank car assets of GE Railcar around 2016. This is a UTC shop repaint.

BowThanks cv_acr. So.."UTCK" is a misprint (should be "UTCX" repaint), right?

Thanks, again, Chris. So, to be clear, the Atlas car has the photo of a car that has an NATX reporting mark (for a GE Railcar) with the caption, "Trinity 25,000 Gallon Tank Car NATX [UTCK Repaint]" so saying it's an "UTCK repaint" is wrong, because (1) if it was a repaint it would have a UTC mark (for example, UTCX), not NATX, and (2) there is no UTCK mark. Right?  Confused

Wrong.

UTC acquired the tank car assets including the reporting marks. They've been repainting NATX (and acquiring new cars with NATX marks) in their own lettering style.

The model represents a tank with NATX reporting marks that's been repainted by Union Tank Car. You can see UTC's "The Tank Car People" slogan by the numbers.

The "UTCK" is NOT a reporting mark, it's the code for the paint shop.

UTLX is a division of Marmon which is owned by Berkshire Hathaway. So it is a sister company to BNSF.
