Bicentennial Hood Unit Schemes
Posted by FRRYKid on Friday, January 14, 2022 2:44 AM

Yet another one for my Forum friends. I am looking to design a bicentennial scheme for my protolanced railroad. The engine will be a GP20 as those are the road units for my railroad. I am usually pretty good as designing schemes but I would like some prototypes to examine. I have seen pics of Milwaukee's unit and I am familar with the BN ones but I would like to see more examples from the railroads in existance at the time. Even pics of BN's American Freedom Unit (1991 IMS) or the SP's unit that was painted for the 1984 LA Olympics would help as well as they were in red, white and blue schemes as well. I have a bicentennial caboose that was inspired by the Alaska Railroad's wide vision caboose so I will "borrow" ideas from most anywhere.

Thank ypu as usual for any assistance that can be provided.

At the time of the bicentennial Kalmbach gathered as many as they could and took a group photo of at least 20 of them.  I believe it was a centerspread photo in an issue of Trains and I think poster size copies may have been available. If you can find one you should able to copy or combine some ideas.

Not prototype, and not a hood unit, but...

This is the bicentennial unit I made for the STRATTON AND GILLETTE to pull my collection of Micro-Trains (Kadee back then) bicentennial boxcars.

I made this about thirty years ago. It is an N scale Kato E unit decorated with decals from a Microscale set for the ALASKA RAILROAD.

If I were to do this again, it would be much more fanciful. My skills have improved in the past three decades.

If you've access to the Trains magazine archive, there's a lot of pictures scattered through the 1976 issues. Most aren't in color, but fortunately the contrast between blue and red is great enough that you can tell what they look like in color.

Google is your friend.

Did an image search for bicentennial locomotive and got thousands of images.

While that isn't a hood unit, seeing that unit does give a few ideas.

I'm also finding some other ones with the suggested searches including this one from the Forums itself: https://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/p/263532/2974373.aspx

After a lot of design thinking and mental gymnastics, I have come up with a design. It is inspired by PL&E 1501

  • The nose will be blue. The Herald King set will contribute one great seal. That will be applied on top of the nose stripes from the Alaska Railroad engine set.
  • The cab will be red with "1776" in gold Gothic lettering on it. Somewhere on the cab I will also put my railway's name.
  • The long hood will be white with the possiblilty of the end being blue. The star stripe from the Alaska Railroad set will go on the bottom next to the walkway. A 2" gold stripe will also go next to the cab and somewhere on the side to separate from the roof paint. The gold will also separate from the end blue possibly.
  • The walkway and ends will be blue as well. The white stars from the HK set will be between the stanchions on the long hood and on the rear end with a possiblility on the front end depending on how the plow rides.

Now it's just a matter of rounding up all the needed parts, pieces and decals. Thank you for all the assistance.
