Whistles and wheels
Posted by sailor38 on Thursday, January 20, 2005 11:40 PM
Just returning to the hobby after 30 year hiatus and I find I've forgotten some things (imagine THAT!)

First, I remember that two longs, a short, and a long is the signal for grade crossings. Anyone remember the other more common whistle signals?

Next: What names were given the various steam loco wheel arrangements?
4-4-0 Atlantic, 2-6-0- Mogul, 2-8-0 Consolidation, 4-6-0 Ten Wheeler (sometimes Casey Jones), 4-6-2 Pacific. Beyond that, it gets fuzzy.
Can someone help me out with the rest of the designations?
Thanks![zzz]

Try this site for the wheel arrangements (search for "whyte").

Try this one for whistle signals:
