While these refrigerator cars are ice bunker type I do spot a few Santa Fes in there:

I saw Santa Fe mechanical cars in this same PRR yard in Pittsburgh, Pa. The B&O had a much smaller produce yard behind the large buildings in the background.

Yeah, we used to see them regularly up here in southern Ontario, too.

      Yes.  Santa Fe mechanical reefers went nationwide, including on the PRR.  Speaking of Rapido's coming Rr-56s, twenty cars (SFRD 2000-2019) had meat rails installed in 1962.  They also saw service nationwide as SFRM 38000-38019.  A number of these cars were marked "When empty return to agent ATSF, San Angelo, Texas", and regularly showed up at an Armour meatpacking house in Boston, MA, on the New Haven.

     Upon being rebuilt for carcass carrying for Armour, these cars lost their name train markings and, were repainted in the jumbo herald and modified "Ship and travel Santa Fe all the way".  Another rebuilding in 1972-73 saw 11 of these cars removed from meat service and classed as Bx-165 boxcars.  This would be their final assignment on the Santa Fe as, they were restricted to hide loading only, a death sentence for any railcar.  As hide cars, their reporting marks became ATSF 40730-40740 and other than reporting marks, any other repainting is extremely unlikely.

I'd have to say "very likely" bringing western produce to large cities on the east coast.

I'm sure someone will come up with more direct proof shortly.

Hello,

were Santa Fe mechanical reefers seen on 1960's pennsylvania freight trains. I am interested because I would like to one day run the rapido ho Santa Fe mechanical reefers with pennsylvania diesels. I know that earlier Santa Fe and pacific fruit express reefers did appear on the pennsylvania as seen on the cover of the book classic railroads you can model. I would enquire on the santa Fe forums but this cost some money.Thanks in advance for any advice.
