Dan,

I am a New Haven enthusiast and modeler, with a little Southern Pacific once in a while.  You should see some of the non-Haven crap that has been produced over the years.  With cars going for close to $60 a piece these days, I will not buy a model I cannot verify the accuracy of.  Prototypical accuracy including paint job  is one of the reasons I gave up on American Flyer.  Still, I hope someone can produce proof there really was a red VTR boxcar!

The car is probably a "foobie" or manufacturers daydream.

Thanks...

Interesting. Even some of the companies known for accurate portrayals of the prototype have offered up red ones.

I don't think a red, FMC exterior post, VTR car will be found.  The car as shown in the picture is in fact a deep orange or, tangerine with black lettering.  The photo is listed as being taken on "2/22/1977" and, the "new" date on the car is 2-76 so, that much fading is unlikely.  The car does seem quite dusty vs. faded.

Vermont Railway boxcars could be found in three colors:

5000 series, rebuilt former Rutland 40 foot PS-1s stretched to 50 feet, dark green with white lettering.

4000 series, FMC exterior post, incentive per diem cars, dark orange with black lettering.

11000 series, Pullman Standard 5344 cu. ft. IPD cars, yellow with dark green lettering.

12000 series, FMC exterior post IPD cars, yellow with dark green lettering.

13000 series, PS 5344s, yellow with dark green lettering.

Between 1978 and 1986, I photographed thousands of cars in thousands of mainline freight trains which included a number of VTR boxcars.  None were red.  The car is probably a "foobie" or manufacturers daydream.  A search of on-line photo sites will show VTR locomotives in red and white but no boxcars.

There are red ones and there are green ones, also locoos in those colors with the same mountain logo.

I have seen a number of them in videos on VT railroads.

Have fun,

Richard

There are a couple more on this site, but to be fair, the red IMO, has faded to look brownish,or the photo colour could be questionable.

Red Vermont Railway Boxcar?

I've seen several models painted with in a bright red with the mountain logo of the Vermont Railway but I can't seem to find a prototype picture of a red one. Does anyone know for sure if there was such a car, and, if so, can you list a link of a picture of one?

Thanks!
