Maybe this ??
The New Haven also had at least one Alco S type switcher with a box in the same position as the AC&Y unit pictured. It was for radio equipment which is most likely the case here.
Details are sure hard to find and my one connection to the AC&Y passed away a few years ago.
My only "stab-in-the-dark" guess is that there could be some relationship to radio equipment in there? Seems like the photos I've found of the S2s that have the box also have a Sinclair antenna as well.
Just a guess
Good Luck, Ed
Ric,
Is there any way to post a photo of it? Wait! I think I may have found one on the Fallen Flags website: (Click photo to enlarge)
Is that what you are talking about?

Time...It marches on...without ever turning around to see if anyone is even keeping in step.
Can anyone tell me what the cube-sized box is on the hood of some AC&Y Alco S2 switchers? It is mounted in the center of the cab forward windows. I am trying to detail an S2 for a friend.
Thanks in advance,
