I model the BNSF and am thinking of building a heritage fleet. It would consist of the ten predessor railroads that became the BNSF. I am considering two different types of locomotives to use. The SD45's or the C44-9W's.
Has anyone else consideered or done this?
I did this kind of in reverse. I assume that in the "future" (today) the STRATTON AND GILLETTE became part of another system via merger. I painted a late "dash-8" GE locomotive in the color scheme of a 1950s SGRR F unit as a heritage unit for this future ficticious railroad.

Living the dream.
If you use a GE ES44AC you can just copy BNSF, https://trn.trains.com/news/news-wire/2020/08/13-bnsf-unveils-25th-anniversary-locomotive.
Prototypical and no thinking involved.
NO WAY. i do not like the way BNSF is doing their heritage fleet. It looks cheap. UP, CSX and NS did it right in my opinion.

That's okay. Warren Buffett probably won't like your idea either.
I want to know if anyone MODEl a heritage fleet NOT the 12 inch to foot scale. Kato has producted heritage fleet locomotives.
This sounds like a neat idea.

I'd consider ES44ACs or SD70ACes like NS did, given that those are coming out of the shops fresh.
Plus Athearn did some leg work for you: http://www.athearn.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=ATHG83068

BNSF has one quirk that three of the original railroads used the same livery (CB&Q, FW&D, C&S), which makes them somewhat different than, say, NS. At least Savannah & Atlanta said so on the side, even if the paint job was a Southern clone. Frisco, NP, and SP&S cab unit schemes (and decals) could readily transfer to a modern widecab.
I model in N scale. I have three spare C44-9W shells that I can paint. I have found a hobby store that has them for a good price. So I would need to purchase the other seven from them. I think a C44-9W would make good looking units. All of the decals are available except for the AT&N which I can make myself. The locomotives were black with a white roof. The herald with a number below on the side of the cab. That is all that they had. A very simple paint scheme.
