With Scale trains bringing them out, are any o them still in service? They would be 50 this year. I am thinking no. Were later runs (1970's plus)done that might be in service?

They were only made in 1979-1980 and no more were made after that, after that finger racks were installed on other flat cars for moving reinforcing steel. After market racks are available to be installed on other flat cars.

The steel plant where I worked used in-plant finger rack cars for moving rod and small billets. Some of the racks were added to cars originally received for scrapping, while others were on new cars, built in-house.It's funny that this topic should arise at this particular time, as just last night I was looking at a gondola loaded with steel rod, and thinking that it wouldn't be difficult to create finger racks to fit particular cars.

Yeah, that clip art is available to anybody. My brother created the ads, and he's used quite a bit of it, mixed in with his own creativity.
There are around fifty modellers who are either modelling GERN or at least receiving the GERN-related promotional material.
