Thanks Ed for the information on how the winterization hatches work; I had seen something about how they redirected flow back into the Engine Room to keep it warm in cold weather, and that was a pretty decent summary ; your info on the E8 added to that.
I have built a hatch using styrene and some small screening - had I known about the Details West product I would have been tempted to get some ( and maybe I still will. - I have a New Haven DL-109 that had the hatches, I believe). Based on the numberous photos/sideviews of the BAR F3A's it appears that they used the EMD product; the curved tops are distincitve; the BAR Geeps have hatches with a different profile.
Thanks agains for the information and suggestions.
Peter
Hi,
You don't mention what scale you are working in. For HO, Life-Like would provide winterization hatches that the modeler could add if desired. There are other makes as well:

Here is an overview of the system as explained by EMD (This is from an E8 so there are two "power plants".

Looking through the screen you would only see the top of another fan. The shutter (damper) was located vertically between the two fans.
I understand some roads made their own winterization covers so BAR may be one of them?

Good Luck, Ed
Well, modeling the screen seems to be the answer for me. Maybe a piece of metal insect screen, then sort of squish it to make the squares into parellelograms, and glue would do it. Thanks for the help

Not sure about BAR locomotives, but your correct, as far as the shutters. You usually don't see them, even with a good picture of the top of locomotive because of the screen covering the top of the opening.
I've never seen the shutters modeled.
I believe the typical screen for them, was an expanded horizontal diamond type screen, but I'm not positive about that.

I am working on a model of one of the BAR F-3A locomotives; they all had a winterization hatch. I couldn't find a photo of the top side of the locomotive, so I would like to know, in general, what the top of the hatches looked like? My assump
tion is that it has shutters which are are open or closed ( in the winter), similar to radiator shutters. Can anyone provide a general description for me (not necessarily BAR practice)so i can model it somewhat accurately, rather than leave the box just open at the top. Thanks
