Color of PRR K4s Cab Roof and Tender Top?
Posted by Trainman440 on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 12:22 PM

I've noticed that the red color on PRR K4s are different.

IIRC, the cab roof is painted tuscan red, but the tender top(forgot the proper term) is a different shade of red.

Which colors are these spots on PRR K4s?

The reason they are different is the cab roof received three coats of paint, the first coat was 100% Oxide Red, the second coat was 75% Oxide Red and 25% Black and the third coat was 50% Oxide Red and 50% Black, the tender top was painted 100% oxide red, and the coal area should be painted that color also.

Rule 3: Illuminating discussion of prototype history, equipment and operating practices is always welcome, but in the event of visitor-perceived anacronisms, detail descrepancies or operating errors, consult RULE 1!

The cab roof got these different mixes at different times as shoppings took place. Supposedly the first color went just from drip rail to drip rail. The next shopping would be to the same area and the 3rd paint would extend to the bottom edge of the cab roof. I read this in a PRR paint publication.
