All,
I have a question on reporting marks, particularly those for cars owned by private entities that end in "X". For example, as a lad growing up in the '50s next to the Michigan Central (NYC) main line from Detroit to Chicago, I do not recall seeing things like "UTLX" on tank cars. They may have had them then and I don't remember them properly. If not, when were they instituted by the AAR?
Obliged,
John

Just about forever ago. My earliest Official Railway Equipment Register lists them, and it is the November 1926 issue.
I assure you, cars with UTLX reporting marks operated on the tracks you mentioned.

Thanks, Ed. My sweetie reminds me regularly that my memory has been unreliable for some time.

Highly likely. I sometimes catch her mumbling about the potential availablity of "chromosomal therapy". . . . .
