Not knowing your era, power plants burning pulverized coal could ship out flyash for use as an expander in concrete products.  Plants burning lump coal could ship the ashes in hoppers or gons.  Depending on the size of the plant, in-bound loads could occasionaly include fire brick, boiler tubes, lube oil.  On rare occasions after an overhaul, scrap material could be shipped out by rail.  Some of these moves take place once over a period of years so you would not see a boxcar or tankcar on a weekly or even monthly basis.  If the plant was being expanded, brick, cement, steel, and electrical apparatus would be frequently seen during the construction period.

Coal powerhouse: Inbound and outbound tracks
Posted by northeast_train_guy_1965 on Monday, March 19, 2018 8:37 PM

Hello Everyone,

I am laying out the trackage in my industrial zone to the coal powerhouse. The obvious rolling stock traffic is full coal hoppers being dropped off and empties being picked up. Are there any other types of rolling stock that would deliver any other resources to a coal powerhouse? What did the powerhouse do with the ashes, were they shipped out in gondolas?

Thanks
