According to the Painting Guide issued by the Southern Railway in 1946, freight locomotives were painted black and passenger locomotives were painted green. So if any 4-4-0's were around they would have been painted green.

Were Southern 4-4-0s / small steam painted green as on the Spectrum HO models?

Hi, you may know that Bachmann have issued both their Baldwin and Richmond 4-4-0 models in SOU "Sylvan Green", with double gold striping. Looking at SOU websites I find plenty of info that this scheme was used for top link passenger locos, e.g. Pacifics, though in the 1930s double lining was simplified to single, but no confirmation that this scheme was applied to small steam such as the 4-4-0s. I also found a quote from the Railway Review, 27 November 1926, saying that the Southern had just introduced the green and what a pleasant contrast it was to the previous black. 1926 was well past the heyday of the 4-4-0, so by that time any left on passenger services would presumably have been on branch lines. I would be grateful for any info on whether this paint is appropriate for the Spectrum 4-4-0s, and if so in what circumstances? Maybe there are some preserved locos in these colors??

Thanks,

Bill.
