With the slow new-build market everything seems possible.
And what will happen with the next emission standards round? Carb already petitioned EPA for a Tier 5 for locomotives: https://www.arb.ca.gov/railyard/docs/final_locomotive_petition_and_cover_letter_4_13_17.pdf
The PM and NOx requirement have to be followed by heavy-duty highway trucks since 2007. These requirements are easier to follow with high-speed diesel engines if only for leaving more space for exhaust aftertreatment.
And here GE lacks a suitable engine like EMD withe the Cat C-175-20 or Siemens with the QSK95.Regards, Volker

The GE Transportation segment would be a very wise investment for the Chinese. It would open a lot of doors for them, supplement areas in railroad equipment production where they are already strong, and would largely escape the national security issues involved in a potential Chinese purchase of other GE operations. The hang-up there might GE's military jet engine business, but a fairly easy thing to split off, I suspect.

GE made a statement that all of It's divisions are up for sale at the right price. The transportation division has had some 'feelers' from what I have read. I would not read into this stuff too far.

There are many possibilities IF anything happens. Someone can buy the assets, make locos and call it XYZ Company. The locos might look the same but be branded Loco Moco. Or the new owner might obtain the rights to use the brand name, ala Craftsman ( now Stanley Black & Decker "Craftsman") tools, Westinghouse TVs, they could sell "GE" locomotives.
I'm not up to date on whether a GE washer currently is a GE GE washer or an XYZ "GE" washer. I do know they used to be good but no longer are. A lesson for the loco division, hopefully.

So are we going to lose GE as a locomotive builder?
peahrensInteresting news items on GE locomotive division as GE performance has them considering what business areas they may sell, joint venture, etc.

Interesting news items on GE locomotive division as GE performance has them considering what business areas they may sell, joint venture, etc. Maybe Tesla and Uber will buy it and trains will operate only on sunny days, operated by computer from a distance.
