I know of two nose lenghts, 88" and 102".  What was the third one?

81" Chicago Northwestern units and Milwaukee Road (from some quick googling).

Apparently there is a fourth and 5th short hood length for SD40-2s

116" early SP SD40T-2 and UP SD40-2s

123" ATSF and KCS SD40-2s plus late SP and SSW SD40T-2s

I measured the distance from the front of the cab to the vertical face of the underframe for an Athearn SD40 and a Scale Trains SD40-2.  As best I could.

The SD40-2 was 2" longer.  That's so close to zero (under the circumstances) I'm leaning towards "the same length".

More to the point, an equal amount of length was NOT added at each end.

Them's the breaks,

To complicate matters, the size of the front porch of an SD40-2 will be affected by the length of the short nose, which had three options.  The longer ones provided more room to house extra equipment such as that required for Locotrol.

Can anyone suggest where I can find photos or even documentation from EMD that bears this out?

Are you familiar with this site?

https://www.thedieselshop.us/

I often go here for roster and other diesel-related questions...

Also from a Wikipedia article:

As the SD38SD39SD40, and SD45 shared a common frame, so too did the SD38-2, SD40-2, and SD45-2. It was 3 ft (0.91 m) longer than the previous models, giving a length of 68 ft 10 in (20.98 m) over the coupler pulling faces. The SD38-2 and SD40-2 shared the same basic superstructure, since they used the same 16-645 engine (in Roots-blown and turbocharged form respectively); the long hood was 18 inches (457 mm) longer than the SD38 and SD40, but since the increase in frame length was even greater, the SD38-2 and SD40-2 had even larger front and rear "porches" than the earlier models. These empty areas at front and rear are spotting features to identify the Dash 2 models of both units. The SD40-2 can be distinguished from the SD38-2 by its three roof-mounted radiator fans instead of two, and a single large exhaust stack instead of two smaller stacks.[1]

Hope that helps,

Yet ANOTHER SD40 vs. SD40-2 Question
Posted by Chess-C1223 on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 1:15 PM

Basically, I am trying to explain to someone that the additional length of the SD40-2 vs. the SD40 is evenly distributed between the front and rear platforms.  The individual that I am discussing this with insists that all of the length was added to the rear porch.

I tried to point out that the SD40's rear platform is more visually prominant than the front and whith the longer SD40-2 frame, this difference is even more pronounced.  Unfortuantely, I don't have any models available to me that I can photograph to illustrate what I'm saying, but am I not correct?  Can anyone suggest where I can find photos or even documentation from EMD that bears this out?
