As I mentioned this is for a friend, who models the ACL. Since he enjoys both steam and diesel I thought the M3 caboose would fit in well. Supposedly they were used even into the early 60s.

I'll take a ready to run version, I have seen them built up on evilbay from time to time, but are extremely tough to get.
Maybe East Coast Railroads will make one. They already made some for SAL, so why not ACL?
ACL Cabooses were red,later changed to black/yellow or orange following the merger with the SAL.
Which time period are you modeling?
Use a paint you are comfortable with and appears to you to be a close match. You don't have to use straight out of the bottle paint. You can mix colors to get closer to your perception.
Despite long discussions on this and other modeling forums (not just train forums) the true colors are actualy variable (depending on paint manufacturer, paint batch, ageing/weathering, and probably other factors) You could match paint chips or even use the actual paint used on the prototype and still be told you are wrong.
The proper color is also highly subjective. Memories are faulty. The color in photos depends on: the camera, lighting conditions when the photo taken, the photo processing and printing, monitor settings when viewed on computer.
Some modelers try to account for distance from the subject by fadeing colors. The idea is that viewing an HO model at 3' is the same as viewing the prototype at 261'
All the above does not preclude the fact that there are colors that are close enough and others that are too far off. I leave it to others (more knowledgeable than me) to comment on paint brands and mixes.

I just picked up an AMB Atlantic Coast Line (ACL) M3 wood caboose laser kit, with the intention of assembling, painting, and detailing it for a friend as a gift. Does anyone know what manufacturer's paints would best represent the exterior and interior colors of the ACL M3s?
From the photos that I've seen the exterior appears to be close to "fire engine red". I've also read that the interior was either a seafoam green or a beige. I'm leaning towards using Scalecoat I but I'm open to suggestions. Tamiya is one of my favorite paints to use because it sprays on thinly and evenly.
I appreciate any help anyone has to offer on the topic. I've also contacted the ACLHS and am waiting to hear back from them. I'll let you know what I find out.
