Depending on the era you're modeling, a drift mine may not be appropriate.  After the 50's or so, I think it would be far more likely that the conveyor came from under a truck dump (or several) like this:

I've never been to a coal mine, but, I can imagine that the actual opening in the side of the mountain was framed, and supported, which also gave support to the conveyor, as it left the mine, and entered into the covered portion, that extends to the buildings.

I can picture a concrete framed opening, or portal,  large enough for men, and maintainence vehicles to enter, and the conveyor set-up off to one side.

I am building the diamond coal kit.  Can somseone tell me if there would be some sort of support (ie, concrete, wood timbers, etc) below the and around the conveyor shaft where it enters into the side of the mountain/hill?

Thanks
