Small town in 1940s Oregon - what would it look like?
Posted by tbdanny on Thursday, March 2, 2017 1:54 AM
What kind of roads/sidewalk would a small town in Oregon during the 1940s have? All attempts to Google for 'Small Town Oregon 1940s' and similar searches have pulled up photos for towns as widespread as California and Milwaukee.

What I mainly want to know is how the road/sidewalk would be arranged for the town I have on my layout:

Would the tarmac of the road extend under the gas station on the right, or would it just be dirt under there? On the left, would the tarmac go all the way to the edge of the boards in front of each building, or would there be a border of dirt? Any help would be appreciated.

Found this photo of Oregon City in 1945

Downtown Prineville Oregon early 1900's. Unpaved street but loos like already had concrete sidewalks

Granite Oregon in 1960's but probably didn't look much different in 1940's

Pictures of Kent Oregon from 2010. But might be useful

Most likely gravel around the gas pumps

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.

I don't have a leg to stand on.

Thank-you.  That photo of Granite in the 1960s looks like the type of town I have in mind Smile.

tbdanny,

Our National Archives doesn't always come up near the top of Google searches unless you include its acronymn, but I'm familiar with it as a historian. Try this set of terms:

"nara photographs oregon"

Then you can choose Images, for instance, and get a lot of results.

This link has a lot more possibilities:

Mike,

Thanks for that PDF.  Looks like I'll be using it frequently.
