Ok so the remaining stalls of the roundhouse in cheyenne was the passneger side. I know that on a video they said they had to lengthen the freight side of the roundhouse for challengers and big boys to fit.
I have photos of the 4023 and 3985 side by side in the cheyenne roundhouse from the 1980's and they both fit so why did they lengthen the other stalls.

Ok first there is no such animal as 2-12-0 that UP ever owned it was a 4-12-2. Second the 4023 was housed in the remaining 7 stalls of the Cheyenne roundhouse which was the passenger side so that means the doors could close behind it. Its not likely that the Steam crew would leave the doors open where the 3985 was also stored.
Why is it the freight side was lengthened if the big boy could fit in the original sized stalls.

No they didnt have longer tenders
Challengers and big boys had 28 ton capcity coal and 25,000 gals of water. FEF Northerns were a bit smaller but with the same centipede wheel configuration. I will just guess they removed the tenders on both for storage purposes so they could shut the doors.

I was under the impression that 3985 would not fit completely inside the passenger side of the roundhouse. And the doors were just partially closed behind the locomotive. Did Uncle Pete lengthen the roundhouse to accomodate?
