Following is from the 1950 Keystone Coal Manual.
The Union Pacific Coal Co. was headquartered in Rock Springs, WY.
It operated the following mines in Wyoming (all captive tonnage)
Winton No. 1 and 7 1/2 Mine - Winton, WY
Reliance Nos. 7 & 11 Mines - Winton, WY
Hanna No. 4A Mine - Hanna, WY
Rock Springs No. 8 Mine - Rock Springs, WY
Superior D.O. Clark Mine - Superior, WY
Stansbury Mine - Stansbury, WY
These were all pretty large underground operations with anywhere from 140 to more than 500 employees. They were all slope or slope and drift properties.
In 1950, Sweetwater County produced the most coal of any county in Wyoming (more than 3.5 million tons).
Most of the mines in Wyoming shipped via UP, but CB&Q handled some coal as well. There are lots of videos/DVDs available that show coal cars from the period. This will give you an idea of colors, size, etc.
Hope this helps.
