Caspar Lumber Company - circa 1930 Sawmill
I have linked to items from the WDTV archive YouTube channel before, as they tend to have interesting (well, to me at least) historical short films. This one, as the name implies, follows the operations of a rather large lumber mill (Caspar Lumber Co., Caspar, California) in the early depression era). It mostly covers mill operations, but there is some ship loading and rail loading - the rail loading demostrates the "pickup a few boards at a time and jack-angle them into a narrow boxcar door" handling method, which shows the secret to this operation is a heckuva lotta men.I do like the way they assembled a tall wooden column out of several dove-tailed boards...
Fascinating stuff, chutton! Also loved the assembly of the octagonal wood column, which was subsequently turned to make it cylindrical. Perhaps it will give us all a new perspective of how those large columns were actually constructed the next time we're standing next to one.
