Has anyone heard of a F69L locomotive?
Posted by The Tigerman on Friday, March 11, 2016 10:19 PM

A friend of mine from the Montreal area sent me a model of an F unit locomotive that he kitbashed he said was a F69L.  It has a four axle truck in the front of the "A" type unit and six axles in the back.  I tried to research this thing and found nothing in the NMRA archives.  Does anyone out there know anything about this locomotive?  Prototype?  Photos?  Or is this just a figment of my friend's imagination?

IIRC the New Haven had an fl9 engine designed to run diesel except near Grand Central station where it switched to third rail electric for the traction motors and it had that truck arrangement.

While the Bear has put you on the right track, the Wikipedia entry doesn't mention ten FL9 units extensively rebuilt for Metro North with ABB AC traction equipment in 1994-95. These units had 12-710G3 engines rated at 2800 HP, so the correct model number for an AC unit with a 12-710G3 is "69"...

I would think they should be FL69 rather than F69L, however.

These were numbered 2040 - 2046 and 300-302 and were painted red, blue and silver.

They had a slightly higher roofline than the FL9 with 48" fans located towards the rear of the unit.

Does your model look like that?
