Leland Knickerbocker was the EMC graphic artist who created the red war bonnet paint scheme for the EA-1 diesels in 1937.

He did an awesome job. It always reminded me of flames on a hotrod. I remember the first time I noticed it. It was in the late 1960s. I was really young and we were at the station getting ready to go on a trip, and my grandfather asked if I wanted to see the locomotives. We walked up to the front of the train. All of the cars were all silver until we got up to the very front, the locomotive looked like it had turned red from the heat of going too fast, like a spaceship reentering earth’s atmosphere. Cool! I remember thinking this train would run over Superman no problem.

Who designed the passenger war bonnet scheme? Loewy did a lot of work for the PRR. Was there a design company involved or EMD or was it internal? Whoever it was deserves recognition.
