Trivia : There was one engine painted MP blue after the merger, it was done for a publicity picture of MP/UP/WP engines.

dehusman wp8thsub MP merged with UP in 1982, so no cars received new MP paint after the merger. Not exactly, they were repainted for MP, but had the UP herald on them. The use of the buzzsaw or bird ceased, but cars were (are) still repainted for MP.

Well actually Dave, to my way of thinking, that's UP paint with MP reporting marks, as opposed to an actual MP paint job with MP heralds. I suppose I could have clarified that.

There were still many Pullman-Standard 4427 Cu Ft, 4740 Cu Ft, and 4750 Cu Ft 3-bay covered hoppers in the Buzz Saw scheme before 1997.
The M.P. AIRSLIDE 50' covered hoppers still had the buzzsaw logo before 1997.

MP merged with UP in 1982, so no cars received new MP paint after the merger. The appropriate logo for a car up to 1997 would be the one the car was delivered or last painted with prior to the merger, assuming it wasn't repainted by UP. Cars with the buzz saw and screaming eagle both survive today.
The eagle dates back to about 1979. And the buzz saw preceded it. And freight cars aren't repainted very often. So both are appropriate. But the best thing to do is to research the particular type of covered hopper you've got and see what the spread is on the two versions in 1997.
Sounds like fun.

Hi All:
What's the appropriate logo on MP covered hoppers pre 1997. Is it the buzz saw or screaming eagle?
Thanks
