Did the Norfolk Southern even exist during the steam era?

 

There was a steam era Norfolk Southern.

 

It was merged with the Southern in the diesel era (and their low nose diesels were rebuilt with high noses), but it did end up in the later NS.

 

The largest locomotives were fairly light Berkshires that were on-sold to Mexico.

 

But there is a prototype for steam locomotives lettered Norfolk Southern (in Railroad Roman with no horses)....
