Thanks maxman. I found a picture on rr picture archives of the loco, date16th July 2001, still wearing the BN green and black. The original BN insignia was painted out and BNSF stencil was painted on instead. Also, the photo gave a clear shot of the horn placement. Thanks for the link. At least i don't have to do a re-paint.

Around 2000 BNSF added a nose headlight on the locomotive. You're think about the horn replacement on the roof but not the whole diesel. You would have to strip the BN logo and add the BNSF lettering for complete accuracy.
If it's just the horn then move it. That horn was there in 1995 on the Burlington Northern photo website.
I was thinking about that move the horn from to front to back and add a rotary beacon where the horn was placed.
The website that MaxMan give you is a big help.
Amtrak America, 1971-Present.
If you model October 2000 would your BN 7010 have been repainted/renumbered into a BNSF series?
I'm not sure what you are asking re: the horn location. If you have a picture of that unit from the era you model, and you want the model to be accurate, then you have to move the horn.
Or you can do what some of the rest of us do and just ignore the small discrepancy.
If you want to search more photos, you can go to this link and see other BN SD40-2 photos: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/locoList.aspx?id=BN. You can group the photos by model.
If you want to see them in BNSF paint, then go to: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/locoList.aspx?id=BNSF. Again you can group by loco model.
Hi All:
Just got a Kato N Scale sd 40 2 for BN # 7010, mid production. I always like to look at prototype photos of my locos for weathering etc and i notice the air horns are not at the front of the cab, as per the model. It looks like they are on the right side about halfway down. I model October 2000. Any comments?
