NYC GP20 horns

Your welcome Paul, I found out the same things when I detailed my Atlas RS-32's, the horns were on the top of the long hood and it had more lift rings than the Cal-Scale kit noted along with a couple of grabs that you can't see from the ground.

Thank you for that link. That answeres alot of questions, and even shows the antenna better than the other pictures I had. I have seen all the PC pictures with the horns on the roof of the cab and I knew that was not right. I distinctly remember them being on the long hood many years ago when I would see them in person going through Toledo. I could not remember elwoods as with a change in computers I had lost it. There is lots of good info on the madison rails web site as well, but I could not put my finger on a pix of the long hood top. Thank you again

Many people forget George Elwoods Fallen Flag website because the pictures are not always the best but, he many times have shots that nobody else does, they may not be perfect but they help in modeling.

Also take a look at PC as well. Looks like the horns were also, indeed mounted near the forward exhaust stacks on some units.

Conrail inherited NYC's GP20 locomotives. Take a look at RR Picture Archives under Conrail. All the ex NYC GP20's are pictured with the horns at the front center of the cab.

Not much detail to go on here but it's a start.

If I come across a decent photo I'll let you know. Most trackside shots completely obscure the horn since it is in the middle of the long hood.

My P2K models have the horns incorrectly mounted at the top-center of the cab roof.

Hello,

I have been researching many NYC books, and I have not seen a good top or side shot of the roof of the GP-20s. It looks as if the horns are mounted on the blank panel where the dynamic brakes would be if it had them. My question is where exactly on that blank panel the horn should be. My NYC diagram book does not indicate the horn anywhere, and the NYC Later Power book does not have a good pic, nor does my NYC diesels book have a good side shot so I can tell where it goes. Struck out on the internet also.  My next stop will be the NYCHS, where I am a member, but I figured I would give this a shot first.
