As Tim Allen said:
"Real men don't use instructions, son. Besides, this is just the manufacturer's opinion on how to put this together."

Looks like a neat accessory!
I found this from back in 2007:

Alleluia, I got it to work. I looked at the crossing gate manual again. They showed a diagram for a track powered hookup with a 153ir and I made an adjustment from there for auxiliary power. Thank you for redirecting back to the manual.
at at the crossing gate manual and looked at the track powered diagram
Also, the crossing gate manual, 71-4098-250, shows a hookup using the 153ir with two crossing gates using track power. I want to hookup one gate with auxiliary power.
I presume you have the manuals??

Oh, THAT crossing gate. I've got one that's older than most of the humans on this planet.
But enough about me.
From the material supplied by Mr. Bear, the connections would seem simple enough. But I'm wondering about the initial post mentioning FIVE wires. Out of the crossing gate? The Lionel samples mentioned show only two connections on each version of the crossing gate.
The 153ir is Lionel's infra red accessory controller.
I, for one, have no idea what a 153ir is. If I knew, perhaps I could help. I do not, so I cannot.
Also, if there were access to a wiring diagram, perhaps I could help. There is not, so I cannot.
5 wires, eh? You must have a way-cool crossing gate. I wonder what they all do.
Still, it's neat that the damn thing actually moves and lights up. There's a lot of us who couldn't get that far.
